Moreno Drive in Old Town Temecula

"They Passed This Way" monument was designed by Sam Hicks (a local historian,
lawman and cowboy) and Tom Hudson to commemorate Temecula Valley pioneers
and explorers. The monument is a granite boulder taken from an abandoned
Temecula quarry. Some of the names listed on the boulder include:  Pio Pico,
administrator of Mission San Luis Rey and and Mission's lands in the Temecula
Valley during the 1830's and California Governor in 1840's. John Magee, established
a store in the 1850's that provided a rest stop for settlers and gold seekers traveling
into California. The first Butterfield Stage going east from San Francisco stopped at
Magee's store and the first Southern California Post Office was established at
Magee's store. Louis Wolf opened a general store in 1850's, which was appointed
the Temecula Post Office in 1873, Wolf was appointed Postmaster.
Helen Hunt Jackson, crusader for Indian rights during the 1830's, stayed in the
home of Louis and Ramona Wolf, and after returning to New York, published her
famed novel "Ramona".
