Drive in Old Town Temecula
"They Passed This
Way" monument was designed by Sam Hicks (a local
historian,
lawman and cowboy) and Tom Hudson to commemorate
Temecula Valley
pioneers and explorers. The monument
is a granite boulder taken from an
abandoned Temecula quarry. Some of the names listed
on the boulder include:
Pio Pico, administrator of Mission San Luis Rey and
and Mission's lands in the
Temecula Valley during the 1830's and California Governor in 1840's. John
Magee,
established a store in the 1850's that provided a rest stop for settlers and gold
seekers
traveling into California. The first Butterfield Stage going east from
San
Francisco stopped at Magee's store and the first Southern California
Post Office
was established at Magee's store. Louis Wolf
opened a general store in 1850's,
which was
appointed the Temecula Post Office in 1873,
Wolf was appointed
Postmaster. Helen Hunt Jackson, crusader
for Indian rights during the 1830's,
stayed in the home of Louis and Ramona Wolf, and after returning
to New York,
published her famed novel "Ramona".
